Dig out the BBQ for a fishy feast
As the evenings get warmer, there’s never been a better reason to invite the neighbours round and blow the cobwebs off your BBQ.
To impress your visitors, why not try cooking something a bit different to the usual burgers and sausages – such as fish? Not only do they taste delicious grilled on a barbecue, but many types of fish are lower in saturated fat than meat and are a good source of vitamins and nutrients.
Oily fish such as salmon, pilchards and sardines – canned and fresh – also contain heart-healthy Omega 3 fats, and nutritionists recommend eating one portion of oily fish per week. For a light summer recipe, try Canned Food UK’s Barbecued Salmon & Black Bean Salsa. You can use canned foods to make a quick accompaniment to grilled fish, such as this salsa – or simply add some canned beans and sweetcorn to a pasta salad.
Alternatively, the Tuna with Black Bean & Mango Salsa takes just a few minutes to prepare and cook. The salsa itself also counts towards your 5-A-DAY. Try to buy sustainable fish to ensure that your dishes are good for the environment as well.
Canned fish is more convenient to use than fresh fish, as it needs no preparation and has a long shelf-life. It can also contain more nutrients; canned salmon has more calcium than fresh, for example. Canned Food UK’s Salmon and Broccoli Quiche is a classic recipe using canned fish, which is easy to make and perfect to enjoy as a side dish for a barbecue.
Canned Food UK has devised 16 new recipes with celebrity chef James Martin called ‘u can outdoors’, specially created for you to enjoy on those warm summer nights sitting out in the garden. As well as being good value for money, they’re also different to the usual barbecue dishes – so you can create some interesting, exciting food that will impress the fussiest guests.
