National Sandwich Week takes place on May 16 - May 23 this year and celebrates the nation’s favourite lunchtime snack, the sandwich.
Making your own sandwiches using canned food is much cheaper than buying lunch every day. You can make a range of easy, quick and nutritious sandwiches straight from the can. If you’re stretched for time, there are a wide range of ready-made canned sandwich fillers available, which suit all tastes and dietary needs.
To celebrate National Sandwich Week, try making something a bit different for your sandwiches that are still good for you, easy to prepare and so tasty that they’ll be eaten in a matter of minutes!
Canned tuna or canned salmon is perfect making a quick and tasty lunchtime treat. Canned tuna contains both iron and vitamin D, while canned salmon is a good source of calcium and Omega 3. Remember that if you add some canned sweetcorn, you will also consume a portion of your 5-A-DAY. Canned Food UK’s Tuna Spread and Vegetable Mini Pitta Pockets are a great alternative to the usual tuna sandwich. They’re are filling and fun for kids to eat, too.
If you prefer meat sandwiches, try using traditional favourites Ham or Spam. Versatile and easy to use, canned Spam can be added to a can of Mexican chilli beans and fresh vegetables to create a delicious Chilli Bean Burrito. It uses a wide variety of canned and fresh vegetables, so your family gets the right balance of vitamins and minerals.
For a quick and easy vegetarian lunchtime snack, try Mexican Enchiladas, made with canned beans, canned sweetcorn and that store cupboard essential – canned tomatoes. Teamed with fresh ingredients and tortilla wraps, this recipe is nutritious and slightly different to the usual sandwiches you can buy at the shops.
