What makes up a can label and can it help sell the product?

Lesson 1 - Labels for information

In this lesson, children are asked to look at a range of can labels and to look for common features in them. They learn about what the legal requirements are as to the information on a can and what additional information is also often included.

Learning Objectives:

  • To evaluate a range of can labels, looking for common features.
  • To understand what the legal requirements are as to information provided for the consumer.

Resources:

  • Some cans with no labels! (i.e. soup, peas, carrots, baked beans, fish, fruit)
  • Large sheets of paper for brainstorm.
  • A good selection of can labels (try to get some from the ‘saver’ ranges where there is no picture and very little information).
