Lesson Zone - Introduction

Canned food is a familiar and important part of all our lives. Through these lessons, all carefully designed to deliver the aspects of the National Curriculum in science, English, mathematics and technology, children can investigate how the canning process works and the process of food preservation.

Healthy eating is important to our health and canned food can provide some of the essential five daily portions of fruit and vegetables. Many foods from around the world are available everyday of the year because of the canning process. Food can be harvested and brought to our homes with the minimum of waste.

Steel cans are recycled, saving on energy and the worlds reserves of iron ore, this helps  makes canning a sustainable process. The lessons can be used as part of a programme of education for sustainable development.
