Filling Cans
Why and how is food canned?

Teacher Briefing

Within this unit, children learn about why foods decay and how canning has developed as a food preservative method. Through the use of a cartoon, children are introduced to the scientist, Nicolas Appert, who was one of the first scientists to develop canning as a way of preserving food.

Through use of this unit, children are encouraged to appreciate how canning food has revolutionised food preservation and made available a wide variety of different foods throughout the year. Food preservation ensures that most food harvested can be utilised with minimum wastage.

This unit can help deliver Science QCA Unit 6B ‘Micro-organisms’ as well as elements of the Literacy Strategy, including writing an interview and sequential writing.
