The Lessons: An Overview
Aim: For children to understand how steel
cans are made and recycled, and know how these processes affect the environment.
Using this acquired knowledge the children promote local environmental
change.
Age Group: Key Stage 2. Each activity can be
differentiated by outcome
Curriculum Links:
Literacy Strategy - sequencing ideas, communicating by letter and
poster.
Numeracy Strategy - collecting and handling data.
QCA Science - Units involving materials and their properties.
PSHE and Citizenship - playing their part as active citizens
LESSON 1
A puzzle in which children sequence ideas in a simple branching
programme to understand how food cans are made and recycled.
LESSON 2
Solving a puzzle to understand some of the procedures and processes
used in recycling cans. Using acquired information on the environmental
benefits of recycling to design a poster to encourage more people to
recycle.
LESSON 3
To sort and process data on the recycling habits of families of the children
at the school. Then, devise a strategy for both improving recycling performance
and monitoring that improvement.
