What makes up a can label and can it help sell the product?

The Lessons: An Overview

Aim: To make children look more closely at the labels used on cans and think about what they tell us and how they help to sell a product.

Age Group: Key Stage 2 - Year 5/6

Curriculum Links:
Art & Design – Layout, lettering and general design of a food label.
Literacy Strategy – Using language effectively describe and persuade.

LESSON 1
In this lesson, children are asked to look at a range of can labels and to look for common features in them. They learn about what the legal requirements are as to the information on a can and what additional information is also often included.

LESSON 2
Looking at a range of labels, the children evaluate how effective can labels are at making the consumer want to buy the product. They also look at a selection of labels for the same product, looking how each uses the label to pass on information.

LESSON 3
In this lesson, the children draw on the information they have learnt from the last two lessons and use this to design a label for a new product.
