Healthy Eating
This three lesson project looks at ways to reach a healthy balanced
diet.
The project is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils in years 5/6 covering QCA Science Unit 5A ‘Keeping Healthy’ and
fits into the Literacy Strategy on instructional
texts, descriptive writing, and designing and writing a leaflet.
Food
Can Science
These three lesson plans are designed to assist children
learning more about the properties of materials and which of these
properties are useful. It also includes a test to find the properties
of a material and to learn which materials are renewable and which
are finite.
The project is aimed at Key Stage Two pupils in years 3/4 (the activities
could be differentiated for older pupils), and covers QCA
Science Unit 3C – ‘materials and their characteristics’ and
Education for Sustainable Development.
Making
Cans
These two lessons show how to locate information from a text source
in order to complete a sequential text activity. There is also
an activity to understand how to measure the capacity of a range
of cylinders.
Aimed at Key Stage 2, Years 4 – 6, the lessons cover Literacy
Strategy – sequential texts and reading for information and
Numeracy Strategy – measuring volumes, measuring using a range
of units and estimating measurements.
Filling
This three lesson unit looks at why foods decay and how canning
has developed as a food preservation method and to gain an insight
into the canning
process.
The lessons are aimed at Key Stage 2, Years 4 – 6,
and cover QCA
Science
Unit 6B ‘Micro-organisms’ and Literacy Strategy – writing
an
interview/sequential writing.
Labelling
These three lessons make children look more closely at the labels
used on cans and think about what they tell us and how they help
to
sell
a product.
This
is aimed at Key Stage 2, Years 4 – 6, and covers Art & Design – layout,
lettering and general design of a food label and Literacy
Strategy – using
language effectively describe and persuade.
Advertising
The three lessons have been developed for children to investigate
the world of advertising and begin to appreciate the power that
advertising
has on the ability to sell a product.
The lessons are targeted at
Key Stage 2, Years 4 – 6, and include
Literacy Strategy - writing to persuade, use of adjectives, descriptive
writing.
Recycling
This three lesson project encourages children to understand how steel
cans are made and recycled and know how these processes affect the
environment. Using this acquired knowledge the children can help
promote local environmental change in your area.
The project is aimed
at Key Stage 2 pupils (each activity can be differentiated by outcome),
and covers Literacy Strategy - sequencing
ideas, communicating by letter and poster, Numeracy Strategy -
collecting and handling data, QCA Science: Units involving materials
and their
properties, and PSHE and Citizenship: playing their part as active
citizens.
