Aim: To understand why foods decay and how canning has developed to preserve food.

Age Group: Key Stage 2 Years 4 - 6

Literacy Strategy – Writing an interview. Sequential writing.

LESSON 1
In this lesson, the children learn about why foods decay and how humans have developed different ways to preserve food, including canning.

LESSON 2
The children learn about Nicolas Appert, who was one of the first scientists to develop canning as a way of preserving food. The children read a cartoon about him and then plan and write an interview with him.

LESSON 3
In this lesson, the children learn about how food is canned today. They complete a sequencing activity on this process.
